7 Things to Check Before You Buy a Cordless Vacuum (Most People Skip #4)
Most people compare two things: the price and the suction number. But the things that decide whether you'll actually use your vacuum — and whether it lasts — are hiding in the details.
The vacuum you'll actually use is the one you can grab with one hand.
Here's something nobody puts on the box: most people don't vacuum once a week anymore. They vacuum in bursts. Cereal at breakfast. Whatever the dog dragged in after school. A quick pass before bed so tomorrow starts clean.
That changes what "a good vacuum" means. A machine with huge suction is useless if it's too heavy to grab, makes your hand ache after ten minutes, or dies in a year because the battery can't be replaced.
We've sold more than 20,000 of our own cordless vacuums, and the same questions come up again and again. So we turned them into a simple checklist you can use on any cordless vacuum — ours or anyone else's.
Light enough to carry upstairs one-handed

Weight is the number one reason a vacuum ends up living in the closet. If it takes two hands and a deep breath to haul it up the stairs, you'll put it off — and the crumbs win.
Heavier machines also get worse as the day goes on. Reaching under the couch, lifting it to the ceiling corners, carrying it room to room — every extra pound adds up.
A power button that stays on

Some cordless vacuums only run while you hold a trigger down. That sounds minor until you've cleaned the whole downstairs and your hand is cramping.
It's one of the most common complaints we hear — especially from anyone with arthritis, wrist pain, or small hands.
It stands up on its own

The phone rings. A kid yells. Someone's at the door. You let go of the vacuum — and with a lot of stick vacuums, it clatters to the floor or has to be leaned against a wall where it slides down.
A free-standing vacuum just… stands there until you're back. It also means you don't have to drill a wall mount into your house to store it.
A battery you can swap out

Every rechargeable battery slowly loses capacity — your phone, your laptop, and every cordless vacuum on the market. That's just how lithium batteries work.
So the real question isn't if the battery will wear down someday. It's what happens when it does.
A brush roll that doesn't wrap hair

If you've ever sat on the floor cutting hair off a brush roll with scissors, you know. Once hair wraps around the roller, suction on carpet drops and the vacuum starts pushing debris around instead of picking it up.
Headlights on the floor head

This sounds like a gimmick until you try it. Low LED lights on the floor head throw light across the floor at an angle, and suddenly you can see the fine dust, crumbs, and pet hair hiding under the table and along the baseboards.
It's weirdly satisfying — and it means fewer "I just vacuumed this" moments.
Converts to a handheld

Pull the wand off and you've got a handheld for stair treads, couch cushions, the car seat, and that strip of crumbs between the stove and the counter. No second gadget to buy, charge, and find space for.
Bonus: read runtime claims carefully. For every cordless vacuum, the longest runtime on the box is measured on the lowest power setting. Max power runs shorter. That's normal — just compare like with like, and look for an on-screen battery display so you're never guessing.

We built the Kolnar S3P to check every box on this list.
Full transparency: we make vacuums. When we designed the S3P, we started with the complaints people kept telling us about — heavy machines, cramped hands, vacuums that topple over, and batteries that turn the whole thing into e-waste. Then we built a $129.99 vacuum that answers all seven.
